Request for Proposal

Healthcare Foundation of Wilson (HFW) believes that by citizens coming together throughout our community, it will make a lasting impact on the health and wellness of Wilson. As a response to promote our four focus areas, we recognize organizations can benefit from funding that brings our community together by increasing awareness or providing:  

  • Access to Healthcare  
  • Active Living / Healthy Eating  
  • Alcohol / Substance Misuse  
  • Behavioral / Mental Health  

HFW seeks proposals from nonprofit organizations located in Wilson, NC, to support events that bring the community together, while positively impacting the health and wellness of our community.

Better Together Funding Terms

  • Request Range: Up to $2,000
    • As a nonprofit organization, it is essential to note that maintaining compliance with the public support test is the nonprofit’s own responsibility. Please review the information provided on the IRS website. If you are unsure of your public support status, please contact an accounting professional. To read more about the IRS Public Support Requirements, click HERE.
  • Contract: Grantees will be required to sign an agreement of terms and conditions prior to receiving the grant funds, acknowledging, for instance, their charitable status and that the funding will be used for the purposes provided in the application.
  • Disbursements: Once a grant application is received, please allow up to three (3) weeks for processing.
  • Purpose: Organizations will use the funds to support any needs associated with hosting the proposed event.
  • Award Distribution: Awards will be issued every other month through a competitive grant process. Grants will be issued until the budget for 2026 has been expended.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Organizations applying for funding must be tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) nonprofit.  
  • Organizations must be operational for more than two years to be considered.  
  • 501(c)(3) nonprofits must provide a copy of the determination letter from the Internal Revenue Service indicating the tax-exempt status.  
  • The organization must have filed a 990 or 990-N (e-Postcard) each year. Documentation will be requested.  
  • The organization must confirm the scheduled event. (e.g., board approval, advertisement, rental agreement for space.)

The nonprofit’s mission and/or the purpose of the event must align with at least one of our four focus areas.

  • Alcohol / Substance Misuse

The Better Together Grant will prioritize organizations that are using funds to make direct outreach to the community.

Funding Considerations Icon

List of Funding Considerations

Organizations applying should consider the following purposes for which funding cannot be used.  

  • Capital campaigns and fund drives. 
  • Capital projects such as brick-and-mortar projects, including construction, purchasing land, and renovation projects. 
  • Purchasing vehicles. 
  • Grants to individuals, dinners, event sponsorship, fundraising, or endowments. 
  • Retirement of debt or any expenses previously incurred. 
  • Funding of deficient operational shortfalls or funding that substitutes existing funding or debt relief. 
  • Funds that would be considered a “pass through” to another organization. 
  • Lobbying, activities supporting political candidates, or voter registration drives. 
  • Organizations with a substantial purpose of influencing any political, legislative, or regulatory cause. 
  • Broad, unfocused requests. 
  • Organizations that have a grant request that exceeds their total assets. 
  • Organizations that discriminate against or restrict citizens from receiving program resources because of race, ethnicity, color, culture, language, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, socioeconomic status, or religion. 
  • Scholarships. 

Exceptions to the listed considerations and guidelines will only be granted upon the recommendation of the HFW staff and approval by the Board of Directors.  

Grant Process Timeline

The schedule listed is the grant timeline for the Better Together Grant Funding Cycles. Dates are subject to change, but with notice. Applications can be submitted no more than three (3) months before the scheduled event date

September Cycle 

  • September 7-18 – Accept applications through Foundant
  • September 24 – Grant Awarded

November Cycle

  • November 2-20 – Accept applications through Foundant
  • November 26 – Grant Awarded
