Reporting Term: One-Year

Organizations can submit up to three applications per grant cycle, but the total amount of all requests must not exceed $150,000. Organizations can only request funding for the same program two consecutive years.

Eligibility Requirements Icon

Eligibility Requirements

Organizations applying for funding must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofits, government institutions or schools in the greater Wilson community, whose funds will be directed toward the enhancement of the healthcare outcomes of the Wilson community. Qualifying organizations must have at least three years of successful operations before a grant can be considered.

Funding Priorities Icon

Funding Priorities

The foundation prioritizes:

  • Innovative ideas that support the development or expansion of one or more of our four focus areas.
  • Programs focused on youth through age 29.
  • Eligible organizations who implement or have a desire to start evidence-based program models identified as having significant outcomes in one or more of the four focus areas.

Grantmaking Guidelines Icon

Grant Making Guidelines

The organization must exhibit:

  • Financial Viability – The organization is financially stable, possessing a greater likelihood of long-term sustainability.
  • Sustainability – The specific program requesting funds from HFW can maintain sustainable operation beyond the scope of funding.
  • Collaboration/Partnership – The organization is collaborating or has attempted to collaborate with local and other statewide services/agencies to strengthen the program and avoid duplication within the community.
  • Outcome Measurements – The organization currently tracks outputs and outcome goals of this program and/or others to evaluate success of program implementation. If this is not a practice of the organization, a willingness to track outcomes will be imperative.

Funding Considerations Icon

List of Funding Considerations

Responsive grants cannot be used for:

  • Capital campaigns and fund drives.
  • Capital projects such as brick and mortar projects, including construction, purchasing land and renovation projects.
  • Purchasing vehicles.
  • Grants to individuals, dinners, event sponsorship, fundraising or endowments.
  • Retirement of debt or any expenses previously incurred.
  • Funding more than 25% of salaries/stipends for program operations.
  • Funding of deficient operational shortfalls or funding that substitutes existing funding or debt relief.
  • Funds that would be considered a “pass through” to another organization.
  • Funding more than 10% of the grant budget for incentives/promotional items.
  • Lobbying, activities supporting political candidates, or voter registration drives.
  • Organizations with a substantial purpose of influencing any political, legislative, or regulatory cause.
  • Broad, unfocused requests.
  • Organizations that have a grant request that exceeds their total assets.
  • Organizations that discriminate or restrict citizens from receiving program resources because of race, ethnicity, color, culture, language, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, socioeconomic status, or religion.
  • Individual K-12 schools or organizations that operate within an individual school. We will consider school grants at the district level.
  • Scholarships.
  • Food, unless it supports a learning experience. We will only fund up to 5% of the overall grant request for this budget item.
  • Programs/budget items that are a duplication of previously funded projects (e.g. gym equipment, food for food pantries). Please see our previous grant recipients list.

Exceptions to the considerations will only be granted at the recommendation of the HFW staff and the approval of the Board of Directors.
